Its sometimes easy to find yourself wavering in your support for the government in such economically testing times and its understandable that the Tories have made so much political capital over some of the previous statements of our now prime minister.
But...it only take reading Conservative statements like the one made by Theresa Villiers today that one realises that they are still the same old lot, with short memories and even shorter on ideas as to how this country should move forward. To suggest that the Labour government has been short on decisions with rergards to transport is frankly ridiculous. Coming from the party that presided over the debarkle of rail privitisation, put investment into rail at an all time low, failed to implement Thameslink 2000 or Crossrail, ignored the requirement for a fast rail link to Heathrow and allowed this country to suffer the European embarrassment of racing across france at 180 mph and then coming up the otherside into England on old commuter lines at a maximum of 40 mph is little short of amazing.
So, dear Tories, just to recap from the top of my head....transport achievements since 1997: West Coast Mainline upgrade, East Coast upgrade, re-opening of a number of old rail routes, Heathrow Express, Channel Tunnel Rail link, London Underground improvements, extension of the DLR east ans southwards, East London line extension, Crossrail...oh and more people travel by train today than at any other time outside of the two world wars....that was something you lot weren't expecting were you?
Oh, and before you ask, yes i do support the 3rd runway at Heathrow. We need both rail and air improvements.
