Bit late in posting this. Bit I thought this was a bit much and rather wondered if there really was such a lack of news that they couldn't find anything better to report. While I'm pleased that we still have a Labour supporting tabloid on Fleet Street, I do think we should applaud Boris for actually getting on his bike, rather than opting for a car and driver, which I have no doubt he could command and would be more towards Tory 'type' than a humble bicycle.
I love my bike, its the perfect form of transport in London and I'm a strong believer that if you want to understand the issues that people face, then you need to get on and experience it. Okay, Boris shouldn't be jumping lights and I, as a rule, tend not to since it sets a bad example to others and give motorists another excuse to moan about some such nonsense about us not paying road tax or alike. But, by him cycling, I think he has the potential to really make a difference to cycling in the capital and I don't mean 'bike rental' schemes as suggested by his predecessor (sorry Ken). We need a sensible look at cycle routes, proper cycle lanes, some sense on cycling in parks (I cite the example of the northern end of Hyde Park, where cyclists are barred from the, generally empty, northern park road and forced onto the nightmare that is Bayswater Road.
By being on a bike you interact with the world around you and Boris' daily ride to work is one of the best opportunities for him to meet the average Londoner, without being surrounded by the medley of press officers and advisers. So, lets welcome Boris and his bike, just please keep half an eye on the lights.
